Carla's Gluten Free Recipe Box Newsletter

February 8, 2016

Dear reader,

I remember the good ole days when I picked up the phone and called for Chinese food delivery. However, I never knew what I was really eating. Some restaurants say they don't use MSG, but do occasionally when they don't receive an ingredient they ordered. I'd prefer to make my own and know that it's not only MSG-free, but gluten-free, as well.

I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as my family has.

Happy and healthy gluten-free cooking!

Delicious Gluten Free Orange Chicken

A classic Asian dish to replace another takeout night. You can adjust its sweet and savory flavors by increasing or decreasing the soy sauce to your liking. It’s easy to make, and your family and friends will rave about it.

Image: Gluten Free Mongolian Beef

After visiting PF Chang's China Bistro and having their Gluten Free Mongolian Beef, I had to create my own recipe. This recipe may be made mild and sweet, without peppers, sweet, or as spicy as you wish with some added red pepper flakes. It is one of our favorite dishes. I hope you enjoy this gluten free Mongolian beef recipe as much as we have.

Gluten Free Beef Stir Fry with Broccoli (Lower-Fat Option)

During a visit at PF Chang's, our waitress stated that most of the entrees are over 1,000 calories. It was hard for me to imagine, but after learning how to stir-fry the authentic way, I now understand. If you want amazing flavor in your stir-fry meat, use lots of oil. I have provided an authentic recipe below, but feel free to use less oil to reduce calories.

Gluten Free Wonton Soup

I've been on a huge Chinese food kick lately. I don't quite know what my body's craving, but we've enjoyed it very much. This gluten free wonton soup is part of the craving kick. My husband doesn't usually like to make a meal out of soup, but he went to town on this one. Enjoy!

Gluten Free Egg Rolls and Dipping Sauce

Though the filling may not be easy, the actual making of the outer shell of these gluten free egg rolls is extremely easy. And you can always fill it with left overs, meat and or veggies. I have seen a recipe or 2 online that calls for rolling your own dough. I was just not up for that! Number one, gluten free dough is difficult to work with in many cases, and number two, simply put, it's too much work if you're going to make 2-3 dozen egg rolls. Remembering my batter that I use for my onion rings, I tweaked it and used it for these gluten free egg rolls. The egg yolks and the sugar help the browning and crispness. And after trying a number of batter thicknesses and cooking temperatures, I finally came out with the perfect crispness I desired. I hope you enjoy this gluten free recipe as much as we did. They are addictive, especially if you haven't had any in awhile!

Crispy Open-Faced Gluten Free Egg Roll

You may have had gluten-wrapped egg rolls in restaurants before beginning a gluten-free diet. Not only can you have traditional gluten-free egg rolls, but you can have an even crispier, open-faced version. They thoroughly satisfy the need for crunch. The meat sauce turns people into ginger-lovers.

Gluten Free Hot and Sour Soup with Noodles

If you miss hot and sour soup at your favorite Chinese restaurant, this is a must-make recipe. Shiitake mushrooms pair well with chicken and garlic, and with the additional ingredients, this soup is a delight. However, you may use tofu instead of chicken as a vegetarian option, as well as vegetable broth for chicken broth. As a plus point, shiitake mushrooms are packed with iron.
