Gluten Free Onion Soup Mix Recipe + Dip

Looking for a gluten free onion soup mix recipe? To my surprise all our gluten eating guests loved it! Several guests asked me what ingredients were in my dip. Since we are not big on sodium, I left out about 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons of the mix, though you may wish to use the entire recipe. Enjoy this gluten free onion soup mix recipe for dips or soup. We sure did!

In 2011, when I first created this recipe, the ingredients that I found online for Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix were: onions (deyhydrated), salt, cornstarch, onion powder, sugar, corn syrup, hydrolyzed soy protein, caramel color, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, monosodium glutamate [MSG], yeast extract, natural flavors, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate. However, most recipes online call for beef bouillon cubes, so I took a stab at it.

UPDATE see my notes in [brackets]: In 2015, their recipe changed. The ingredients I recently found on Walmart’s website are: Dehydrated Onions, Salt, Corn Flour, Hydrolyzed Soy And Wheat Protein, Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Palm Oil, Caramel Color, Maltodextrin [may contain gluten depending upon the source; however, it is highly processed, the gluten is processed out], Natural And Artificial Flavors, Monosodium Glutamate [MSG], Disodium Phosphate, Arabic Gum, Disodium Inosinate And Disodium Guanylate.

If using this gluten free instant onion soup mix for soup, you may wish to add additional potato starch mixed with water, adding a bit at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.

Gluten Free Onion Soup Mix Recipe

A homemade gluten free dry onion soup mix used for onion dip or instant onion soup.

Ingredients:

  • 8 teaspoons (or 2 Tablespoons + 2 tsp.) dehydrated onions
  • 4 Herb-Ox Beef Bouillon Cubes, crushed or ground (I grind mine in a coffee grinder.) (contains soy, yeast and dairy, but no MSG) (see tip below)
  • 1 teaspoon potato starch (or cornstarch)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground celery seed (I grind the seeds in my coffee grinder.)

Instructions:

  1. Mix all dry ingredients together, breaking down any lumps of starch or bouillon.
  2. If using for dip, mix with 16 ounces of sour cream, as you would with a package of regular instant onion soup mix. Then refrigerate for several hours allowing the mixture to soften; and stir before serving. If using for soup, add boiling water and steep until tender.

Tips

If you prefer a lower-sodium dip or soup, use a little less mix in the dip.

Currently, when I make onion dip, I add all of the ingredients to the sour cream, but use organic reduce sodium Better Than Bullion to taste. Not all varieties are gluten-free. So, read labels carefully.

    1. Alice,

Thank you so much for this important update. They used to label their products gluten free. I know the company makes their gluten ingredients clearly known. Product ingredients change often; therefore, you must read labels every time you purchase them. I hope you read it before consuming. I’ll do my best to announce this fact on this site, my social media channels, and newsletter. I also sent Better Than Bouillon an email requesting an update on which of their products are gluten free.

      With much appreciation,
      Carla

  1. I used this recipe with some olive oil and potatoes tonight. I used to use Lipton’s until they changed their ingredients. All of us, including 3 non-celiacs, found it to be much better than Lipton’s and much less salty. We all loved it!

  2. Facebook comment – Feb. 25, 2015,

“está receita vale a pena! Vc deve encontrar as cebolas desidratadas e em pó na casa das Especiarias.”

    Translation,
“This recipe is worth it! You must find the onions and dehydrated powder in the house of the spices.”

  3. Hiii..Friend i have read your blog.It is full of information regarding gluten free product. Thanks for sharing information regarding recipe about gluten fee soup mix and other gluten free product.I really appreciate your blog….thanks

  4. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is exactly what I’ve been wanting. I’ve tried to create it on my own, but it was never as good as this one. Being gluten free can be challenging and I rely on your recipes a lot. Thanks again!

  5. I don’t use cubes but a powder boullion that is gluten free. How much would I use of the powder? The powder is Orrington Farms Broth Base. It’s wonderful to find a recipe for onion soup mix!

  6. Thank you so much for this recipe! Before we found out our daughter needed to be GF I used onion soup mix for a lot of things. This weekend I finally donated my stash of them to the food bank (we’ve all gone gluten free to avoid cross contamination at home – she is 3 and doesn’t fully understand it yet). I’ve been really wanting french dip sandwiches, but my favorite recipe uses onion soup mix and it just wouldn’t be the same without it, I googled for gluten free options and after a few pages found your recipe which sounds perfect! Thank you!!

  7. Just an FYI…while the bouillon states “no added MSG” there is MSG in several of the ingredients. MSG, even hidden in other ingredients, gives me terrible migraines and I react to any ingredient that starts with “autolyzed __” or
“hydrolyzed ____”, plus yeast extract. I also react to torula yeast, which I noticed is in a lot of flavored chips.

As I started having more frequent migraines, I found this website and I was able to ultimately point them all back to MSG. Now that I know what to avoid, I don’t have any more migraine at all. :-)

  8. The recipe calls for beef boullion cubes which contain soy … soy contains gluten, so I don’t see how this recipe can be represented as gluten free … ???

    1. Hi Frank,

Though some soy product, as with all products, may be cross-contaminated with gluten, Herb ox brand is gluten-free. Hormel Foods lists it on their gluten-free list: [Hormel has removed this page from their website.] In addition, I have contacted Hormel Foods to inquiry about cross-contamination. They verified this product to be a safe gluten-free product.

    2. Frank, I think you may be confusing soy with soy SAUCE. Soy is a plant based product but SOY SAUCE contains added wheat as a stabilizer. Which means if you are gluten free you must avoid all products containing soy sauce, including but not limited to teriyaki, some BBQ sauces, peanut sauce, etc.

  9. I will definitely bookmark this and try to make a vegetarian version. Onion soup mix is way too overpriced, and it’s difficult to find gluten free versions.
