Whether you are going camping or want an easy to dessert you can make on the grill during those hot summer days, this gluten free campfire apple crisp recipe is perfect. It’s a light dessert that you can easily serve immediately after a meal. It’s tastes like apple pie filling. Crisps traditionally contain oats, but you can omit the oats if you are not tolerant and turn the recipe into a crumble. Either way, it’s delicious, easy to make, and very little clean up as you make them in aluminum foil.

Gluten Free Campfire Apple Crisp or Crumble

Yield: Serves 6

An easy and delicious recipe for gluten free apple crisp or crumble for campfires or grills.

Ingredients:

    For the Apple Crisps/Crumbes:
  • 6 sheets of aluminum foil, 24 x 12-inches
  • 1/4 cup white or brown rice flour
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (or Earth Balance Buttery Baking Sticks)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 instant gluten-free oats (optional) (finely chopped nuts is another option)
  • 3 crisp red apples (Gala), cut in half and cored
  • For the Whipped Cream:
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 teaspoons granulated sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat a gas grill to high for 10 minutes, or prepare a campfire for about one hour 15 minutes to one hour and half.
  2. Fold each of the aluminum foil sheets in half with shiny sides together; set aside.
  3. Using a pastry cutter, 2 knives, or your fingers combine the flour, brown sugar, butter,  cinnamon, and oats or nuts, if using.
  4. Place an apple in the center of a sheet of folded foil, skin side down. Bring two opposite corners to the center and fold down and smash on top of the filled apple. Turn the apple over and bring the other corners to the center, above the apple and fold down.
  5. If using a campfire, place a few small logs or thick sticks over the hot ambers. Place the wrapped apples directly on the sticks/wood.
  6. If using a gas grill, lower the heat to low so that the flames will not directly touch the foil. Place the apples on the grill.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes, turning over midway when using a grill. Turn over every 5 minutes on a campfire.
  8. Using a whisk beat the cream and granulated sugar until soft peaks form.
  9. Serve warm apples topped with a dollop of whipped cream.
