This Chinese BBQ pork recipe may be made soy free when using my soy free barbecue sauce recipe which calls for my soy free soy sauce recipe; or with the use of any gluten free soy sauce or barbecue sauce. Traditionally, Chinese BBQ pork does not call for tomatoes or ketchup, though some use it. This recipe is tomato free. And if you’re not on a gluten free diet, of course, you may use any brands you desire. This recipe calls for a slow cooker (crockpot), and may be followed by broiling the meat, which is optional. As you can see in the photo that it is sticky, and you may make it crisp on the outside, if you wish. No matter how you prepare it, in the end, it is flavorful, inside and out. I made this especially for my experiment with gluten free egg rolls. This Chinese BBQ pork recipe truly is a delight. Bring Chinese food back to your life with this delicious gluten free recipe!

Delicious Gluten Free Chinese BBQ Pork (Soy Free and Tomato Free)

Yield: 1 lb. cooked

A delicious Chinese barbecue pork recipe with soy-free and tomato-free options. Makes a great addition to gluten free egg rolls!

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. country style boneless pork ribs
  • 1 recipe Chinese Soy Free Gluten Free Barbecue Sauce Marinade (or your favorite)
  • 3/4 cup low sodium gluten free chicken broth (I use O Organics brand.)
  • 1/2 cup gluten free barbecue sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon tapioca or corn starch (optional)
  • 1 Tablespoons filtered water

Instructions:

  1. Remove excess fat from ribs.
  2. Marinade pork in barbecue sauce marinade for 2-24 hours, turning/tossing meat occasionally. The longer, the more flavorful.
  3. Add pork, BBQ marinade sauce, and chicken broth to a slow cooker; and stir.
  4. Cook on low for 8 hours or about 4 hours on high.
  5. Preheat broiler to high.
  6. Remove pork from slow cooker with tongs and add to a baking dish. If you desire to use the sauce in your recipe, turn slow cooker to high. Once it reaches a high temperature you will thicken the sauce. See below for details. Alternatively, you may add the sauce to a sauce pan and boil; then thicken.
  7. Pour the additional 1/2 cup of barbecue sauce atop the ribs; toss to coat; and baste with a little honey.
  8. Broil until slightly charred, about 3 minutes or more.
  9. While the ribs are broiling, if you are making a sauce, mix starch and water and pour into the slow cooker. Stir until thickened.
  10. Remove ribs and use as called for in your recipe: slice, chop or leave whole.

Tips

It is not necessary to utilize the entire 3/4 cup of chicken broth. Use enough to almost cover the pork. In addition, note that the meat will make additional juices, providing you with ample gravy.
