When you’re gluten intolerant and cannot find any clearly labeled gluten free pumpkin pie spice, make your own using spices you have on hand. Often times, multi-ingredient spices contain an anti-caking agent that contains gluten. When they are gluten free, they still may contain a preservative you don’t want in your body. This homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe turns out perfectly; however, you can adjust it to your liking. You just may like it better than store-bought!

Do You Have Sulfite/Sulfate Allergies?

Per Aggie Horticulture,

These [sulfite] agents have been banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on fresh fruits and vegetables that are meant to be consumed raw. They also cannot be used in foods considered to be good sources of vitamin B, including fresh meat and poultry products. However, sulfur dioxide is still allowed on grapes to control bunch rot. The gas is almost always applied after harvest, before shipping. Treated grapes must be sampled and analyzed. SO residues above 10 ppm will not be allowed.

Sulfites are still used to help prevent black spot in shrimp and it is supposed to be labeled if the SO residue is 10 ppm or more.

Per the Chicago Tribune,

Now a sulfite must be declared also if it has found its way into the food indirectly and is present in concentrations greater than 10 parts per million. Packaging materials are one source of ”nonfunctional” sulfites.

  • Thank you for posting this information and the recipe for pumpkin pie spice. I like to use 1/8 Tsp in 2 cups of decaf chi tea. Very yummy.

I was using McCormick organic pumpkin pie spice until I noticed they use sulfating agents, how rude! I guess if it is organic they can add other "agents" that are harmful.
