You will find this recipe for homemade sweet Italian sausage can be used on a homemade pizza crust or a store bought crust. Along with other toppings it makes the fixings for a great sausage pizza. I have added photos of the pizza that I made: gluten free sausage pizza without sauce.  I usually add sauteed onion and green bell pepper, but I was short on time. I still enjoyed it and think you will, too!

Homemade Sausage Recipe for Pizza

41

Yield: 1 12-inch pizza

A homemade sausage recipe used for your gluten free pizza.

Ingredients:

  • 5 oz. ground pork, lean or regular*
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/8 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1 pinch of teaspoon stevia powder (or 1-1/2 teaspoon brown sugar)
  • 2 pinches caraway seeds
  • 2 pinches coriander
  • 3/4 - 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 Gluten Free Bistro Gourmet Pizza Crust (or your favorite)
  • Homemade Gluten Free Pizza Sauce (optional)
  • Additional Toppings (optional)
  • Sauteed onion
  • Sauteed green bell peppers

Instructions:

  1. If your pizza crust is frozen make sure you defrost it first.
  2. Preheat oven to 400°F. If using a pizza stone, place the stone in the oven as well.
  3. With hands, mix together pork, coriander, caraway seeds, pepper (and red pepper flakes, if using) as you would a meatloaf.
  4. Pre-heat a non-stick frying pan on medium high heat.
  5. Add sausage mixture; cook on medium-high heat until the sausage is no longer pink.
  6. Add water and sweetener; stir; and cook until water is evaporated.
  7. If using pizza sauce, spread pizza over crust.
  8. Sprinkle as much cheese as you desire over crust as close to the edge as possible.
  9. Sprinkle the sausage over the cheese.
  10. Place pizza on top of baking sheet or pizza stone and cook for 14-15 minutes. If using a thawed pizza crust, cook for 7 - 8 minutes or until crust has reached your desired crispness.
  11. Slice and serve.

Tips

The photo shows lean ground pork, but the ones that pizza parlors use is the regular. I've used both.

If using lean pork, and you overcook the sausage and it becomes dry, add a bit of water to moisten.

  • I make homemade Italian sausage and I love pizza so this looks like a good match for me. Never had anything gluten free besides a glass of water but I'll try anything once.
    Thanks for the recipe!

    • Hi Mike!

I like to mix the sausage ingredients in my KitchenAid Food Grinder attachment. It works great for stuff like this! Is the sausage you make gluten-free?
