Soft Gluten Free Garlic Naan – Oven-Baked or Stovetop

Naan is the Indian version of flatbread. There are two versions, crisp/firm and the one I prefer, soft. The soft is to-die-for and is the only version I make! Everyone who has tried my skillet version raves about it. If you have a pizza stone, that version is even better! That’s all I make during the fall and winter. To avoid my kitchen from over-heating, I use the stovetop version during the summer months.

I’ve added garlic to this version. Of course, you don’t have to, but if you enjoy garlic, you’ll love gluten free garlic naan.

If you think about it, naan is perfect for tailgating. You can fill it with just about anything. When Chobani sent me coupons for a few of their Greek yogurt, it inspired a gluten free gyros using this gluten free naan.

UPDATE: Here is the recipe for my Greek Cucumber Sauce.

Meanwhile, enjoy the recipe and don’t forget to check out the short video below this recipe. It shows the final product. It’ll give you an idea of how soft, this gluten free naan really is. Every time I watch it, I crave pizza. A few people told me that they use this dough for pizza. If you do, I do not suggest using buttermilk, but perhaps regular milk, and less of it as it is thinner than buttermilk.

Gluten Free Garlic Naan – Oven-Baked or Stovetop

Yield: Makes 1 oven-baked naan

Soft, tearable gluten free naan with garlic. Serve with butter, chili, or your favorite gluten-free Indian dish that contains sauce such as Chicken Korma. I have both dairy and dairy-free version on this site.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. If you mince the garlic using a knife, smear it onto the chopping board a number of times to make a paste out of it. This way, you won't get chunks of garlic in the naan. Instead, the flavor will permeate throughout the naan. If you use a microplainer/handheld grater, avoid using any leftover skin. Set aside.
  2. Make the oven version of the gluten-free naan recipe at the above link, but add the minced garlic when you add the buttermilk (or dairy-free substitute).

Tips

If the naan doesn't brown enough on the sides, don't hesitate to roll it around a hot, heavy skillet until it is.

If you don't own a pizza stone, try purchasing fire bricks, cover them with foil and bake on parchment paper.

I said, “pizza oven” but I meant “pizza stone”.
