I thought I would provide you with a gluten free turkey list, as it is that time of year again, and the question about which turkeys are gluten free are starting to arise. Ensure you read all of the labels on products you use this holiday season for your gluten free recipes, as ingredients change often. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Note: If your brand is not listed, watch for any term containing the word “starch” or “dextrin”. If the ingredient label contains any of these words, check with the manufacturing prior to consuming/purchasing.

2014 – Always check with the manufacturer whether any solution that the turkey is injected with does not include gluten. They usually use broth which may contain gluten.

I have not updated this list lately; however, I make notes when people update me. It’s a good place to start and then you can visit the manufacturer’s site or call them.

Popular Brand, Gluten Free Turkey List

  • Butterball (The new gravy packets have been reformulated to eliminate gluten, but check labels to ensure the item is the latest. It will be clearly marked. (Update 2016: Their stuffed turkeys are NOT gluten free.)
  • Foster Farms (2016)
  • HoneyBaked Turkey Breasts
  • Honeysuckle White (free of MSG) – white turkeys and bone-in
  • JennieO by Hormel (See their gluten free list here)
  • Norbest (also soy-free)
  • Perdue – Short Cuts Carved Turkey Breast, Oven Roasted
  • Plainville Farms (some are gluten-free – 1-800-724-0206) All are free of antobiotics, MSG, nitrates and other additives.

  • Wellshire Farms Turkey Ham – See their allergen database

  • Do you know if Giant brand turkeys are gluten free? I have never really thought about whether or not poultry was gluten free but, since my daughter is allergic to wheat, I guess I had better start thinking that way. We just have always bought store brand chicken and never given it any thought. Last year I bought the Walmart cheapie but do not know the brand. This year I spent enough at Giant to earn a free store brand turkey.

  • Is there any turkey breast or deli turkey that is free of Gluten, MSG, Soy, and Lactose? Thank you.

  • I would like to know if you are familiar with dermatitis herpes formitis? I have been told I have a gluten allergy but no one has confirmed it. I have been trying to eat gluten-free for almost a year now. I have noticed a change in my skin but I am told it may take up to three years. I was wondering if you can assist me on this topic? I have had digestion problems over the years but feel much better after giving up bread etc.
    Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Mae,

I do not know much about dermatitis herpetiformis, other than the fact it is associated with celiac disease. I am not a medical professional or even nutritionist. Have you seen a doctor about it? Dr. Vikki Petersen contributes an article once a month on this blog. I'll contact her and see what her views are on this subject. Her article is usually posted on the third Friday of each month. Perhaps she can write her next article on this subject. Hang in there!

  • I just found your web site via Prairies Oat Flour site! I'm in love with your site!!!! Thank you so much! I'm sure I'll be cooking a bunch of your recipes soon.

Question: To your knowledge is this list still good for this this year? I will be traveling for Thanksgiving this year and want to let my host (my brother) have the best information available. Thank you.

    • Hi Julia,

Thanks so much for stopping by. Glad you found your way here, and that you enjoy my site. I haven't updated the turkey list since I posted it. I hope to get to this one and the ham list prior to the holidays, but cannot guarantee. It's always best to contact the manufacturer, as ingredients change so often.

      Have a great day!

  • hello, i just read my turkey has been injected with 8% of solution and i was wondering if you ever heard back from safeway/vons.

    • Rose,

I was given Safeway/Von's corporate phone number and because I am carrying or my terminally ill father, I never got to it, but just called them about ham and turkey. Their Corporate Brands Department stated that all of their turkeys are gluten-free. I'm now working on a gluten-free ham list. Stay tuned in!

      Happy holidays!
      Carla
