Better Than Bouillon Gluten Free Status

Read the most recent update about the status of Better Than Bouillon Bases, whether beef, chicken, vegetable, or other flavors.

September 21, 2019 UPDATE: Per the Better Than Bouillon website’s FAQ’s page, they state,

“We do not make the glutenfree claims upon any of our Better Than Bouillon Food Bases.”

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

A couple of days ago, a member informed me that one of the Better Than Bouillon jars she recently purchased was not gluten free, per its ingredient label. I contacted Better Than Bouillon yesterday. One Two of the varieties of their 33 Better Than Bouillon bases contains gluten. Learn which one contains gluten, about their production facility, and whether they test for gluten.

I just checked the three that I have in my pantry from Costco and they’re all gluten free.

UPDATE January 29, 2018:  thanks to a reader, she pointed out that Vitacost.com, which is usually very accurate, shows the ingredients in the vegetarian low sodium base to contain gluten. This in addition to their non-organic beef base.

UPDATE June 15, 2016: A Better Than Bouillon representative just informed me that the “organic” beef base does NOT contain gluten, just the non-organic.

Thank you for your email. Better Than Bouillon is now being made in the facility where wheat ingredients are housed. At this time we do not test our Better Than Bouillon products or ingredients contained therein for gluten. Because we do not test specifically for gluten at this time, we cannot certify that any ingredient is gluten free. However Better Than Bouillon Bases do not contains wheat/related grains – flour, gluten, germ, farina or malt. ONLY the BETTER THAN BOUILLON REDUCED SODIUM BEEF BASE DOES contain BARLEY MALT EXTRACT (GLUTEN). [SEE ABOVE UPDATES.]

I hope that this has been helpful. If there is anything else that I can assist you with, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you again for being a Southeastern Mills Customer. Your business is greatly valued and appreciated.

About Their Manufacturing Facility:

When I asked them to explain more about their manufacturing facility’s equipment cleaning process and whether they manufacture dry ingredients such as flour in the same facility, this is what their representative had to say…

We thoroughly wash down and sanitize our production equipment between product runs, so the risk of cross contamination is minimal. We have made significant investments (people & money) to ensure that our products have the highest levels of food safety and product quality.

In another section of the plant we make a dry soup premix for the soups we make for our Shore Lunch soup mix products, which are not run on the same lines or equipment as Better Than Bouillon.

  1. I saw Kikkomans soy sauce on your gluten free shopping list but the products I see are ALL wheat based unless designated GF. LaChoy is soy based and has always been GF. (My Korean in-laws cook with Kikkomans and I could eat almost everything they make if they switched. :( )

  2. Thank you for the thorough explanations, this is the kind of information I’m always hoping to find to make more informed decisions and not limit myself to certified Gf products. Appreciate it!

  3. This is posted on the Vitacost website re: Better Than Bouillion Vegetable Base (low sodium)
Ingredients: Vegetables and vegetable juice concentrate (carrots, celery, onion, tomato), yeast extract, salt, organic cane sugar, maltodextrin (from corn), canola oil, malted barley extract (gluten), onion powder, dried potato, garlic powder, natural flavor.
This is not listed above in a post by “Patty, 1/20/18”.

  4. I am confused… so which ones contain gluten? I have the organic roasted chicken base… it doesn’t say GF… is it ok?
