Gluten Free Strawberry Sorbet

Strawberry Sorbet (Naturally Gluten Free)

It’s strawberry season again and I am delighted! Sorbet is gluten free, naturally, but not always egg-free. This strawberry sorbet recipe includes several choices of ingredients. Due to my citrus allergies I used cream of tartar in place of lemon juice, but if I could have use lemon juice, and suggest you do for a more flavorful sorbet. Pineapple juice or orange juice will also work well. As a thickening agent you can either use a food starch or egg white, whichever works best for your diet. If you are watching your sugar intake or prefer a refined sugar-free version you may use agave nectar/syrup in place of simple syrup (sugar and water heated). Adding a natural food coloring will make it look more appetizing, but it is not necessary. Select Tea makes natural ones. If you do use food coloring, you are not limited to red. Green makes an awesome gluten free sorbet, as well.  Enjoy! Continue reading “Gluten Free Strawberry Sorbet”

How to Create an Herb Garden for Gluten-Free Cooking

Herb Garden with Basil Plant

Growing Your Own Herbs for Gluten-Free Cooking

Spring has come to the Rockies. The foothills are awash in a gentle green, the weather is warming with no more danger of frost, and it’s time to plant my herbs. You all know that I love my herb garden. To me, gathering fresh herbs and using them in cooking is one of life’s greatest pleasures. I use them in pesto, as well as sauces, stews, and salads and anywhere I can! Herbs lend flavor and aroma to our gluten-free cooking and make a simple dish come alive with added pizzazz.

It is much cheaper to plant your own herbs than to buy them in the grocery store and most herbs are quite forgiving. So, visit your local nursery or grocery store (some carry herb plants) and buy your favorites. Continue reading “How to Create an Herb Garden for Gluten-Free Cooking”

Gluten Free Plum Barbecue Sauce and Steak Rub Recipes

Steak and Homemade Gluten Free Plum Barbecue Sauce

It’s gilling season, and a good gluten free barbecue sauce (cross-contamination free) may be hard to come by, especially a barbecue sauce without tomatoes (allergies). However, I enjoy my Gluten Free Barbecue Sauce Without Tomatoes. This time, since I had some homemade plum sauce already made, I thought it would make a great gluten free barbecue sauce substitute, along with other ingredients and a good steak rub. It came out wonderful!  I’ll use it on broiled steaks, as well. I don’t know if I will ever make a plain steak again!

Gluten Free Egg Substitutes

Image: Raw Egg

For those who are also completely egg-free, you may find this list of egg substitutes very helpful. There are 3 basic purposes of using egg in a recipe: to moisten, to bind ingredients together, or to leaven (rise). Depending on the purpose, will depend upon the egg substitute used. Using an egg substitute is a great way to lower your cholesterol and calorie intake, as well. I especially like the use of flax seed meal as an egg replacer. Though agar-agar works very well, too, it is quite expensive. I am constantly discovering new gluten free egg substitutes. So check back often. I usually add a dated update for new discoveries.

Gluten Free Plum Sauce

e:Red Gluten Free Plum Sauce - Red

I have been craving Chinese food. What better condiment is there to complement Chinese food than a gluten free plum sauce recipe? A quick plum sauce can be made with plum jam, but this gluten free plum sauce is made from fresh, ripe plums! Generally, one would use red flesh plums as they make a more attractive presentation, but you can use any yellow-fleshed plums if you wish. I used agave nectar/syrup which is said to affect your glycemic levels gradually, rather than fast and all at once like refined sugar, and it is less processed. If you’re making it for kids, skip the red pepper flakes. Plum sauce goes well with chicken, pork, egg rolls, gluten-free potstickers and more. Continue reading “Gluten Free Plum Sauce”

Gluten-free: Eating Out

Restaurant Specials Board

There is no doubt that eating out gluten-free is not an easy task, at least not for those with gluten-intolerance. Dealing with rude waiters /waitresses can ruin a meal in no time. Then when your meal comes and it has some gluten ingredients, sending it back adds fuel to the fire. Many of those with a gluten-intolerance or gluten-sensitivity are plagued with other food allergies and intolerances which multiples the problems.  Below I have listed some things that may help some, especially those new to the diet.
