Gluten Free Falafel Mix

Yesterday I tried Orgran’s Gluten-free Falafel Mix so that I could do a review for my Gluten Free Gift Baskets business.  It’s awesome!  I have never made my own falafels, and I haven’t had one since 1997!  Wow!  How time flies!  It seems just like a yesterday!

The mix is gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, egg-free, yeast-free, soy-free, nut-free and vegan.  It contains 7% dietary fiber, 21.6% protein and is made of yellow peas, onion, parsley, garlic, salt,, turmeric, traditional herbs and spices, mustard, sodium bicarbonate.

Falafel Lettuce Wrap

They are made by frying them in at lease 1″ of oil.  I used extra virgin olive oil.  I always feel guilty when deep frying things, so I ate them in an iceberg lettuce wrap; added a variety of lettuce: baby romaine, tango and radicchio; and topped it off with my Creamy Dill Salad Dressing made with Greek yogurt.  I only wished I had some cucumbers to add in.  They’re my favorite veggie in a falafel!

You add the mix and 6 oz. of water to a bowl; stir and let sit for 15 minutes.  Using a tablespoon, scoop out a heaping spoonful and roll into a ball.  The whole package made 13 falafels, over the size of a walnut.

See the above link for the dressing and then add in your favorite veggies!

I love these so much I am going to create a pita pocket / pita bread recipe shortly.  I’ll be in the kitchen today working on it.  So, stay tuned in!

If you prefer to purchase premade pita bread, see the list below where to buy them online:

Heaven Mills (Certified Gluten-Free; and certified Kosher by Star-K and The Beth Din of Tartikov.) $5.99 per package. (I’m waiting for a call back to find out how many pockets are in a package.) I will update this when I find out.
Rose’s Bakery (Current special: 2 six packs for $9.00).
Gluten Free Bagel Company ($5.00 per package) No description or photo; waiting to hear back from them.

There are many others available online, but once I found the certified gluten-free one I stopped searching.  Just do an Internet search for “gluten free pita bread” to find more.

Enjoy!
