New Gluten Free Products 2012 – Part 1

Natural Products Expo West Trade Show

My husband I attended the Natural Products Expo West trade show again this year. The amount of new gluten free products was just overwhelming. We weren’t able to visit every booth which carried gluten free products. Last year we covered them all. It is just amazing how many manufacturers added a gluten free product line. In 2011 there were several manufacturers asking me about how to get their products gluten free certified, however this year, 2012, was a totally different story. All the booths I visited were very versed in the subject of gluten free. It was so refreshing. Though some manufacturers chose to state that there products were gluten free, though no testing or certification is ever done. Their justification? “There are no laws governing gluten free labeling.” It is definitely time, actually overdue, for the FDA to finalize gluten free labeling! Wonderful! La Tortilla Factory Ivory Teff Gluten Free Tortillas

Teff Tortillas

I am so excited! I heard that La Tortilla’s new gluten free tortillas are wonderful! I just received an email introducing their Gluten Free Ivory Teff Wraps. Teff flour is usually brown, but these tortillas look like real flour tortillas. I usually like to make my own gluten free tortillas so that they are low in sodium and all natural. But let’s face it, time does not always allow for this. It sure is nice to know there is a decent tortilla available for a quick grab and go. I heard that La Tortilla’s gluten free tortillas put the current brown rice tortillas to shame! Continue reading “Wonderful! La Tortilla Factory Ivory Teff Gluten Free Tortillas”

Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pasta Review

The first time I saw Trader Joe’s gluten free pasta (brown rice pasta: fusilli, penne, and spaghetti), I never noticed that it stated it was gluten free. I love their penne pasta! At the top of the package it was prominently labeled organic, wheat-free, cholesterol-free and sodium-free, but not gluten-free. It is even certified organic and certified Kosher. I was concerned that it may contain cross-contamination and did not want to recommend it to my clients and readers who have a high gluten intolerance. However, I gave it a try and was very pleased with the texture, flavor and reasonable price. Continue reading “Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pasta Review”

Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening Review and Giveaway

I am so tired of all of the chemicals in our food. As a gluten-free baker, I just cannot do without the use of shortening for a flaky crust. Tropical Traditions sent me a bucket, (literally) of their organic palm oil to test for a review and giveaway. Read my Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening review and about the giveaway below. Continue reading “Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening Review and Giveaway”

Tropical Traditions Organic Brown Rice Syrup Review and Giveaway

Brown rice syrup is often used in gluten-free recipes. I hadn’t used it yet and was given the opportunity when Tropical Traditions sent me a jar of their Certified Organic Brown Rice Syrup which is gluten-free. I made a chewy Gooey Gluten-Free Brownie Recipe and also used in my Udi’s-style Gluten-free Whole Grain Bread Recipe, as it is an ingredient used in Udi’s Whole Grain Loaf. I love it! It’s thicker than agave syrup, but nowhere near as sweet. Continue reading “Tropical Traditions Organic Brown Rice Syrup Review and Giveaway”

Marion’s Smart Delights Gluten-Free Mixes Review and Giveaway

Marion’s Smart Delights gluten-free mixes are manufactured in a dedicated GFCO/GIG (Gluten Intolerance Group of North America) certified gluten-free facility. In addition, it is an allergen-free (free of 8 allergens) and Kosher facility. Their products are certified gluten-free by GFCO (Gluten Free Certification Organization) which means they are tested for below 10ppm (parts per million) gluten. Each new batch is retested; and some batches are sent to the Nebraska Food Science lab to be 100% certain they are safe for you to consume. The test results thus far have been “undetectable” meaning under 5 ppm. Check out the review and enter Marion’s Smart Delights’ generous giveaway! El’s Gluten-Free Snacks Review and Giveaway

Image: El's Kitchen Medleys Gluten Free Snacks

Oh my! What a delight! I am addicted to el’s Gluten-Free Zesty Mix Medleys. The manufacturer, el’s, the makers of these wonderful gluten-free snacks, sent me samples of their Zesty Mix Medleys and Bagel Snaps. I love the Bagel Snaps because they are not as salty as the Medleys, and have a much milder flavor, and I really need to watch my sodium intake. However, the Medleys are to die for! They contain a little bit of everything: potato chips, corn nuts, pretzels, flaxseed corn chips, and a lot of spice, with a bit of a kick (heat). Definitely two tasty snacks! Read on to view a detailed photo of the Medleys.

Earlier this summer, I was on a long flight home from our vacation. When I’m tired is when I make mistakes of consuming gluten. I was handed a similar medley mix on the plane, opened them up and had a few bites. Suddenly a light went off…”These contain gluten! Continue reading “El’s Gluten-Free Snacks Review and Giveaway”
