SuperValu, drug and supermarket retailer, will be rolling out their new health and wellness program which addresses the gluten-free diet for those who have celiac disease, gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, as well as other diseases and conditions. Their supermarkets rolling out the program will include Acme, Albertsons, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s/Star Market and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy. Lucky, Shop-n-Save, and Save-A-Lot were not mentioned.
Over the last twelve months, SuperValu expanded its nutrition-labeling program, Nutrition iQ, which consists of color-coded shelf tags.

In phases, the program will be rolled over the next three months by their registered dietitians. They will begin labeling product shelves, isles, etc. in select stores.
What really grabbed my attention is that they are availing us all to the use of their customer service department to either acquire an extensive list of gluten-free products, ask our gluten-free questions, obtain recipes, snack and meal solutions!
As most of you know, 1 in 133 people have celiac disease, but 97% do not know they have it. SuperValu’s goal is to not only help people manage their condition, but to encourage undiagnosed individuals to seek medical advice. All said, this is big win for celiac disease and gluten-free diet awareness!
