Gluten Free Onion Rings Recipe II

This gluten free onion rings recipe is sweetened with stevia, salted with sea salt and dairy- free. UPDATE: I now use Gluten Free Chef Rob’s recipe which calls for gluten-free beer. However, you can make it almost just as good using sparkling water. It just has a little less flavor and you have to fry them longer to make them crispy. They’re super crispy! Gluten Free Onion Rings II

For a bit softer onion rings with a nice, thick dough, make this gluten free onions ring recipe. They're even sugar-free!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large yellow onion (not extra-large)
  • 1 cup white rice flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 7/8 cup almond milk or cow's milk (I use homemade raw almond milk.)
  • 3/4 teaspoon gluten-free baking powder (I use Rumford's brand.)
  • 3/8 teaspoon stevia powder (I used Stevita brand)
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • extra virgin olive oil or grape seed oil for deep-frying

Instructions:

  1. Pre-heat deep fryer to 375°F.
  2. Mix the flour and baking soda together in medium to large bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat egg; add milk, salt and stevia; whisk together.
  4. Peel onion; slice ends off; and slice onion in 1/3" rings.
  5. Separate rings and dip one at the time into the batter, ensuring all sides are coated thoroughly. Whatever shape your batter is in will be the shape it turns out once dried.
  6. Gently place the coated onion ring into the deep fryer, keeping the lid opened. You may also use a pan, but keeping the oil at an even temperature can be tricky. Once it reaches the desired heat it will continue to rise in temperature. You'll have to lower it and then when it goes down too far raise it again.
  7. Prepare enough onion rings that will cover the top of the oil, as they will float to the top. Cook each onion ring until it is as brown as possible without burning. Turn the rings over with tongs until the other side is nice and brown.
  8. Remove cooked onion rings and place on paper towels to drain.
  9. Repeat steps 5 - 8 until all batter or onion rings are used. You may end up with nickle sized onion rings left over without any batter.

Tips

You can always substitute other types of milks for the raw almond milk, but should probably use less, as the almond milk is thicker than most milks and milk substitutes. You may wish to add more stevia because the raw almond milk is sweet.

If you plan on using any other oils other than the suggested oils please see the smoke point for your oil.

  1. My son has Celiac and is lactose intollerant. So he has to eat gluten free and lactose free . Glad to see this recipe .

  2. This says “egg free” and the recipe doesn’t contain an egg, but in the instructions it says to beat the egg and add the wet ingredients, etc. I’m a little confused. Can it be made without eggs or not? Thanks
