Sometimes there is confusion between crumbles, crisps and cobblers. They all contain a fruit filling topped with various ingredients. A crumble and a crisp have a crunchy topping. A crisp contains oats, where a crumble does not. A cobbler is topped with dough, much like biscuit dough. Panko breadcrumbs are Japanese-style bread crumbs made from the dough of bread without crust. As you can see in the below photo, panko is white, not toasted crumbs. I throw some gluten free panko crumbs into the batter I use for my Gluten Free Tempura recipe as it adds texture. I have been craving a good bread bowl, which I have not mastered yet. Instead of making my own, I used a gluten free ciabatta roll made by Schar. They are light and have a wonderful texture. Hallowed out, they make this gluten free breakfast cups simply amazing! The roll absorbs the egg mixture making extremely delicious and softer than they normally bake up. You must try these! Earth Balance sent me a sample goody package quite awhile ago and I finally got around to developing a recipe using their Creamy Coconut Peanut Butter Spread (also available in crunchy).
