In this classic gluten free grilled cheese sandwich, I added ham. My husband loved it! I enjoy grilled cheese with gluten free bread more than with traditional bread. Make this sandwich plain or with ham or bacon for breakfast or lunch. Serve with fruit or a small salad and you’re good to go! Check out the brands of ham and bread I used and be sure to read my tip too!
Next time, I’ll be adding pineapple as the fruit because they all compliment each other so well. Plus, my husband loves pizza with ham and pineapple, even casseroles! Why not a Hawaiian grilled cheese?
Gluten Free Grilled Cheese with Ham
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (or dairy-free spread: Earth Balance vegan or Smart Balance)
- 2 slices of gluten free bread Schar White Bread*
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese cheddar or your favorite (Follow Your Heart or Daiya for dairy-free)
- 1 slice gluten free ham (Colombus) sliced thinly (or cooked bacon)
Instructions
-
Preheat a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. (I used cast iron.)
-
Grab two slices of bread from the package. Open the slices so that the bread will fit perfectly together once the sandwich is made. Using a pastry brush, baste the tops of the bread with melted butter.
-
Place the buttered side down on one side of the preheated skillet and immediately butter the top sides and distribute the cheese on top. Lower the heat to medium, set the timer for 2 minutes and cover.
-
Uncover and using a heat-proof spatula, check to see if the bread is beginning to brown. If it's not brown enough, increase the heat to medium-high. Fry the piece of ham on the other side of the skillet. Turn it over. You just want to add a little bit of flavor by a few char marks.
-
Add the ham to one of the slices of bread, over the cheese. Cover until the cheese melts, if not already.
-
Transfer the sandwich to a serving plate and slice in half. Serve something moist with this gluten free grilled with cheese sandwich. Between the dry bread and chewy cheese, you'll need a nice crisp salad or juice piece of fruit to balance the textures as well as flavors.
