Gluten Free Chicken Fajitas Recipe

An exceptionally delicious gluten free chicken fajitas recipe. It is a copy cat recipe based on the flavor of Chile’s restaurant’s fajitas. Everything in this recipe is naturally gluten free except for the soy sauce. I also provide a soy-free sauce substitute recipe link. Find several homemade gluten free tortilla recipes, if needed. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I changed this recipe to reflect double the amount of sauce that I used to make.

Gluten Free Chicken Fajitas Recipe

A gluten free chicken fajitas recipe that will knock your socks off. It's full of flavor and similar to Chile's fajitas.

Ingredients:

  • 4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, for pan
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast or tender steak strips
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 medium bell peppers, a variety of colors
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (or white distilled vinegar + pinch of sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, grated
  • 2 teaspoons gluten-free tamari or soy sauce (or soy-free substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon gluten-free hickory-flavored liquid smoke
  • 1/8 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste
  • Gluten-free tortillas or thinly-rolled, Gluten-Free Naan, without the baking powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat skillet over medium-high to high heat. Add oil and swirl around the pan.
  2. Immediately add chicken and cook about 6 minutes, until fully cooked and no longer pink. Alternatively, you may grill the chicken.
  3. Add onion and bell peppers. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 6 minutes.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice, water, oil, garlic, soy sauce, liquid smoke, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add sauce to the meat/peppers mixture. Cook until sauce is heated, about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve in a gluten-free tortilla or over rice. Refrigerate leftovers in an air-tight container.

Tips

Vegetarian Variation: Use beans instead of meat.

  1. Am I correct in assuming that the thinly sliced onion goes into the skillet at the same time as the bell peppers? And when you write, “1/s teaspoon cayenne”, what does the s refer to? My husband and I have enjoyed several of your recipes and look forward to this one too.

    1. Hi Carol,

I am happy to hear that you and your husband have been enjoying my gluten free recipes.

Thanks for pointing those errors out. Yes. Saute the onions and peppers together. The amount of cayenne you add will depend upon how spicy you desire the fajitas to be. You can start with 1/8 teaspoon and up to 1/2 teaspoon.

      Enjoy,
      Carla
